$faa|1-Is Breathless Pants?
$fafWell if you're breathless, you're probably panting which sounds a bit
like pants. Erm, yes.
Actually I don't think that it is pants, but it's not as good as some
of the magazines with large advertising contracts with Power Computing
say it is. 95%? I think not.
Playability? Well I didn't find much. Perhaps I haven't quite stumbled
across it yet as I have read letters in magazines with people raving
about how playable the thing is. AB3D, now that IS playable.
Also a main problem was that even on a 50MHz 030 you still have to use
2x2 pixels to get the full frame rate.
The game engine is not brilliant either, considering how raved about it
is. The textures are the same all over the place, and all walls are at
right angles. Its just a 1x1 pixel Fears engine.
Also the rates of turning/walking/running needed tweaking because they
felt a bit naff. Also having to hammer the keyboard to fire like some
sort of retard from Gamesmaster was crap too.
These niggles aside there are many brilliant and innovative aspects to
this game, so I would give it about 75%.
There was a similar situation with Fears. Some idiots thought "Nice
Graphics" and forgot to check out the gameplay, awarding it over 90%,
when it was really only worth around 80.
As for Amiga Power's score of 50-odd% for Breathless, what a load of
toss. I read the review in the newsagents, and they didn't really
justify this score at all. Breathless isn't that crap. No wonder no-one
buys their silly 15 page games pamphlet.
They also had a competition because they couldn't puzzle out why fog
lighting effects were used indoors. It's smoke you fools. You've just
let of 300 rounds of ammo haven't you?
A version 1.1 patch has now been released for Breathless, which claims
to increase frame rate by 20%, as well as saving level codes and
preferences to disk which is also much needed.
